Coos Bay, Ore. — A Coos Bay man was arrested on multiple charges Monday afternoon following a traffic stop that resulted in the seizure of several firearms and illegal substances from his vehicle.
According to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), the incident began at approximately 3:15 p.m. on March 10, when a deputy patrolling the Barview area observed a white Chevy Silverado driving along Cape Arago Highway without license plates. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on Bruce Road, where he encountered the driver, later identified as 51-year-old Richard Brant.
During the stop, the deputy reportedly saw a handgun on the dashboard of Brant’s vehicle. Brant partially lowered his window but refused to lower it further, prompting the deputy to conduct a more thorough investigation. Upon further inspection, the deputy discovered that Brant had an active misdemeanor warrant and a revoked driver’s license.
The situation escalated when Brant allegedly refused to exit the vehicle and locked the doors. As the deputy attempted to take control of the situation, Brant reportedly reached for the handgun on the dashboard but dropped the weapon after the deputy grabbed his wrist. In response, the deputy used a baton to break the car window and successfully secured the firearm. A brief struggle ensued before Brant was placed under arrest.
Upon searching the vehicle, deputies discovered two additional firearms: a short-barreled rifle, less than 26 inches in length with a barrel under 16 inches, and a modified short-barreled shotgun. Both weapons were reportedly visible in the vehicle. Deputies also found a suppressor, three concealed Kershaw daggers, a loaded 9mm handgun, and a modified 12-gauge shotgun. Additionally, suspected methamphetamine and a pipe were found, along with various ammunition.
A K9 unit was brought to the scene, and after obtaining a search warrant, further evidence was uncovered.
Brant was arrested and transported to the Coos County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a short-barreled rifle, carrying concealed weapons, possession of methamphetamine, interference with police, menacing, harassment, resisting arrest, driving while suspended, and the outstanding misdemeanor warrant. He remains in custody.
The incident highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers face during routine traffic stops and underscores the importance of thorough investigations.
