Astoria, OR – The Astoria Police Department arrested a 46-year-old man following a violent encounter involving a weapon near 11th Street and Duane Street in Astoria.
According to police, on May 23, 2026, at approximately 9:03 a.m., Astoria Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a male subject swinging a large machete and yelling at another individual in the 1300 block of Commercial Street. Officers responded to the area and located the suspect nearby.
The suspect was identified as Michael A. Valero Jr., age 46, of Astoria.
Police stated that Valero was initially calm and cooperative during contact. However, the situation escalated when officers informed him he was being detained for disorderly conduct. He allegedly attempted to walk away and refused to comply, leading officers to attempt physical detention.
According to authorities, Valero then punched an officer during the encounter. Officers disengaged and attempted to de-escalate the situation. The suspect reportedly placed his hand on a large knife inside his backpack before officers deployed less-lethal tools, including a Taser and pepper spray.
Officials said Valero ultimately dropped the knife and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital for medical clearance before being lodged at the Clatsop County Jail.
He has been charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful use of a weapon, assault on a public safety officer, and resisting arrest.
Authorities described the incident as a rapidly escalating situation in which officers used restraint and de-escalation efforts to prevent serious injury. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with additional information is asked to contact Sgt. Litwin with the Astoria Police Department.
