BOZEMAN, Mont. — Over the last week or so, Montana St. head football coach Jeff Choate emerged as one of the finalists for the Boise St. head coaching job.

New Boise St. athletic director Jeramiah Dickey flew out to Bozeman Thursday to meet with Choate. Dickey also flew to Eugene to meet with Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos.

All the speculation and waiting is officially over — the Broncos are likely to go with Avalos as their next head coach.

Choate tweeted out earlier today that he is staying Bozeman. “God is good. I’m so thankful for all the love and support I’ve received over the past several weeks. While I’m appreciative to have had the opportunity to engage with Boise State, I’m thankful to be the head coach at Montana State University,” Choate said.

Both Choate and Avalos have ties to the Broncos program. Choate was there as the running back and special teams coach from 2006 to 2008, then from 2009 to 2011 as the linebackers and special teams coach.

Avalos played for Boise State from 2001 to 2004 as a linebacker, then coached on the Broncos staff from 2012 to 2018. He spent 2016 to 2018 as the Broncos defensive coordinator.

As for Choate, he will continue to be the head coach for the Bobcats heading into the spring 2021 season.
