Astoria, OR – In a concerted effort to enhance pedestrian safety, Sergeant Litwin spearheaded a grant-funded pedestrian safety enforcement operation across the city on Thursday. The initiative aimed to address various traffic violations, particularly those endangering pedestrians, while fostering awareness and compliance among motorists.

During the operation, law enforcement conducted a total of 34 traffic stops, revealing significant infractions within the city’s roadways. Among these stops:
– 28 instances were flagged for Failing to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk, emphasizing the critical need for motorists to prioritize pedestrian safety.
– Three cases were identified for Unlawful use of a cell phone while driving, highlighting the dangers of distracted driving.
– One seatbelt violation was recorded, emphasizing the importance of adhering to basic safety measures.
– Additionally, two other traffic violations were addressed, reflecting a comprehensive approach to road safety enforcement.

The primary focus of the operation was not solely punitive but also educational. Most drivers were provided with warnings and educational material, emphasizing the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and prioritizing pedestrian safety. This educational component underscores the initiative’s commitment to fostering long-term behavioral change among motorists.
