Portland City Council Reaffirms Commitment to Improving Safety at Dawson Park Amid Ongoing Concerns

Portland, OR — The Portland City Council passed a resolution on Wednesday, reaffirming its commitment to addressing ongoing safety issues at Dawson Park in North Portland. The park, which serves as a community gathering spot, has become a source of increasing concern for residents due to frequent gun violence, drug activity, and other criminal behavior that has made it unsafe for many to enjoy.

Residents from the surrounding neighborhood shared their experiences during the council meeting, many expressing frustration over the lack of action to curb the dangerous conditions in and around the park. Julie Allen, a nearby resident, spoke passionately about the park’s decline. “Dawson Park is a fixture of this community, but sadly one that myself and many of my neighbors are not able to enjoy because of the murders, gunshots, open drug use and dealing, and prostitution that occur in the park,” she said.

The park, which features a playground and is located in a residential area, has seen a steady increase in criminal activity. Residents reported feeling unsafe not only in the park itself but also while walking through the neighborhood. The situation has become so dire that some, including parents, have stopped using the park entirely.

A particularly traumatic incident occurred in 2021 when a parent recounted hiding behind a piece of playground equipment with their child while witnessing two men brandishing firearms and debating whether to continue firing at one another. “We were terrified,” the parent said, describing the scene as a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by families trying to enjoy public spaces.

More recently, gun violence flared again in July when a violent shootout erupted in the park. Over 80 rounds were fired in rapid succession, striking two people. One victim later died from their injuries, further intensifying concerns among residents. This shooting marked the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued the park.

Despite these challenges, city officials have maintained that addressing safety at Dawson Park is a priority. Mayor Ted Wheeler, speaking at the council meeting, assured the public that efforts were underway to tackle the ongoing issues. “City teams have been working diligently to reduce gun violence, address livability issues, and support our local community in the Dawson Park area,” Wheeler stated.

The city has pledged to increase resources and interventions to improve safety at the park, including a focus on reducing gang activity and drug dealing. In addition, the Portland Police Bureau has been involved in heightened patrols and increased community engagement in an effort to restore a sense of security for residents and park-goers alike.

Still, the road to resolving these complex issues appears long. For many in the surrounding neighborhood, it will take more than just a resolution from the City Council to bring about meaningful change. Local residents are calling for a multifaceted approach that includes not only law enforcement but also community-driven solutions, social services, and infrastructure improvements to address the root causes of crime.

As the city continues to grapple with these challenges, Dawson Park remains a symbol of the broader struggles facing urban areas in Portland and other cities across the nation, where gun violence and public safety have become pressing concerns. For the residents of North Portland, the hope is that this renewed commitment from city leaders will lead to tangible improvements and, ultimately, a safer environment for the community to reclaim their park.
