Portland Activists Push for Continued Organizing Amidst Political Tensions

PORTLAND, OR — As protests continue across the country, organizers in Portland are stressing the importance of maintaining momentum during Donald Trump’s presidency. Kacey DeSantis, an organizer with Portland for Palestine, emphasized the need for sustained action to protect the rights of marginalized communities and stand against injustice.

In a recent demonstration, DeSantis shared her concerns about the political climate, urging the city to support those exercising their right to protest. “As far as Portland is concerned, what we ask of the city is to help us protect our rights,” she said. “Don’t prosecute the protesters who are trying to make a stand. We need a way to be organizing collectively and gathering together as a city.”

The protest, which remained largely peaceful, saw a small police presence. Officers, stationed about a block away on bicycles, remained on standby but did not engage with demonstrators. This peaceful atmosphere contrasted with a similar protest earlier in the week, where police arrested multiple participants after some individuals began vandalizing buildings with spray-painted slogans.

Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez addressed the law enforcement response during a press conference on Wednesday, asserting that his office would hold protesters accountable for any illegal actions. “If people break the law, they’re going to be held accountable,” Vasquez stated, emphasizing that acts of violence or vandalism would not be tolerated.

Despite the strong stance on accountability, the protest itself unfolded without significant confrontation. The only disruption occurred when a Beaverton family, standing across the street from the demonstration, sported Trump memorabilia. The scene quickly escalated into a shouting match between the family and some protesters, although no physical altercations were reported.

While tensions remained high in some areas, many activists like DeSantis argue that protests are an essential tool for advocating for change. As Trump’s presidency continues to fuel division, Portland activists are committed to ensuring their voices are heard, calling for both protection of civil rights and a continued commitment to non-violent protest.

For now, it remains clear that Portland’s activist community will keep pressing for justice, even as the political landscape shifts.
