COOS COUNTY, Ore. – Law enforcement in Coos County made several arrests over the weekend related to driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII), highlighting the ongoing efforts to curb impaired driving on local roads.
On January 18, deputies from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash around 4:30 p.m. near Highway 101 and Newport Lane. Upon arrival, authorities determined that one of the involved drivers, identified as 26-year-old Cameron J. Waugh, displayed signs of intoxication. According to CCSO officials, Waugh had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, and he was arrested after failing field sobriety tests. Waugh was subsequently transported to the Coos Bay Police Department for additional testing. He was cited and released for DUII, reckless driving, and four counts of reckless endangerment.
In a separate incident, the Coos Bay Police Department (CBPD) arrested six individuals for DUII between January 17 and January 19. These arrests occurred during officer-initiated traffic stops, with one arrest resulting from a citizen’s report. According to CBPD officials, the latest round of arrests brings the department’s total DUII arrests in 2025 to 13.
Impaired driving remains a significant safety concern, with data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicating that one person dies every 39 minutes in a DUII-related crash. Local authorities continue to urge residents and visitors to make responsible decisions behind the wheel to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
