COQUILLE, Ore. – A man charged in the 2024 killing of a Coos Bay resident has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter, according to court records.

The case began on August 13, 2024, when Coos Bay police responded to reports of a body discovered near Eastside Park, located at Fifth Avenue and E Street. Upon arrival, authorities found 36-year-old Braxton Busch deceased, with evidence suggesting homicidal violence as the cause of death.

Authorities initially charged Benjamin Kolton Remy, 30, in connection with the death of Busch. Remy was arrested on August 22, 2024, when he was apprehended on unrelated warrants. After further investigation, he was formally charged with second-degree murder.

However, on February 18, 2025, Remy pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree manslaughter. In exchange for the plea, the murder charge was dropped. Remy was sentenced to six years and three months in prison, with credit for time already served. Following his release, he will be required to serve three years of post-prison supervision.

The sentencing marks the conclusion of a legal process that began with the tragic discovery of Braxton Busch’s body nearly six months ago. While Remy’s sentence is a significant reduction from the original second-degree murder charge, it underscores the complexity of criminal cases and the role of plea agreements in the judicial system.
