Astoria, OR – The Astoria Police Department responded to an incident on the Megler Bridge on May 22, 2026, after reports of a disabled vehicle and a person in distress.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched at approximately 8:24 p.m. after a motorist reported a vehicle stopped at the highest point of the bridge and an individual outside the vehicle. Additional reports were received shortly afterward indicating a medical emergency.
Multiple agencies responded, including officers positioned on the bridge and below at Pier 1, along with support from the Port of Astoria, the Oregon State Police, the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, the Astoria Fire Department, and Medix Ambulance.
The individual was recovered from the Columbia River and transported for emergency medical care. Despite life-saving efforts by responders, the person did not survive.
