EUGENE, Ore. — No charges have been filed in connection with the April 23 crash that resulted in the death of a beloved Eugene resident, but recent court documents reveal the driver involved was allegedly impaired at the time of the collision.
According to a search warrant affidavit, Scott Stolarezyk had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.23 nearly an hour after his Toyota RAV4 struck Sharon Schuman. Schuman, 79, was out for a morning walk on the Amazon Bark Path when the crash occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m.
Stolarezyk told police he did not remember the incident, attributing his blackout to a coughing fit that had previously caused him to pass out. He also cited lingering health issues from a past COVID-19 infection. Court documents note that he reported consuming one alcoholic apple cider at 10 p.m. the previous night and another at 2:30 a.m., when he reportedly woke due to insomnia.
Schuman was an accomplished musician, a University of Oregon literature professor, and an author. Her death has deeply affected the local community.
As of now, no charges have been filed in relation to the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
