EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon announced that three international students had their visas reinstated on April 28, following a series of revocations earlier in the month by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In a wave of visa cancellations that swept across the United States in April, international students at universities nationwide found themselves facing the unexpected loss of their ability to remain in the country. The DHS revoked the visas of several students, including those attending the University of Oregon, based on criminal background checks. However, the university asserted that the revocations were carried out without regard to the nature of the allegations or the students’ involvement in any criminal activities.
The incident caused confusion and concern among affected students and their institutions, as many received little to no communication from the federal government about the revocations. The University of Oregon, along with other universities, quickly mobilized to advocate on behalf of their students. In response to the widespread controversy, the U.S. Department of Justice moved to address the issue, moving to reactivate visas for international students across the country.
Following the intervention, the University of Oregon confirmed that three students had successfully had their visas reinstated. A fourth student is expected to have their visa reinstated shortly. Officials from Oregon State University reported that seven of the 13 students with revoked visas at their institution had also seen their visa status restored.
While the situation has largely been resolved for many students, the incident highlights the precarious nature of international student status and the potential for abrupt disruptions caused by bureaucratic processes. The quick response from the U.S. Department of Justice, coupled with efforts from universities, has provided some relief to affected students, but it also underscores the need for clearer communication and due process in such matters.
