LEBANON, OREGON – A 57-year-old man from Lebanon, Oregon, was arrested on Monday evening on charges of online sexual corruption of a child and luring a minor, following an investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).
The arrest of Burl Hilburn on April 7 came after an investigation initiated by a social media personality who posed as a 14-year-old boy. According to the sheriff’s office, LCSO officials were alerted to Hilburn’s online communications with the social media personality on March 11, which led to an in-person encounter at Hilburn’s residence. The social media personality reportedly caused a disturbance at the home and recorded interactions with Hilburn, though authorities noted that the individual did not fully cooperate with the investigation, withholding critical details about the conversations.
As a result, deputies were forced to seek search warrants to gather the necessary evidence. During the course of their investigation, it was confirmed that Hilburn had sent explicit messages to someone he believed was a minor, specifically a 14-year-old boy.
While law enforcement worked to secure evidence, the social media personality continued to harass Hilburn and his family, creating additional complications in the case. Despite this, authorities are continuing to follow up on information obtained through the search warrants to determine if there are any additional victims or crimes linked to Hilburn.
Sheriff’s deputies have expressed concern over the growing trend of cyber-vigilantes attempting to catch predators online. While such individuals often claim to be acting in the interest of protecting children, LCSO officials have pointed out that these efforts can sometimes prioritize sensationalism over safety. Without proper training, they warn, these actions can pose a risk to the public and hinder law enforcement’s ability to conduct thorough and effective investigations.
The sheriff’s office has emphasized the importance of allowing trained law enforcement professionals to carry out investigations in order to ensure all evidence is collected properly and potential victims are provided with the support they need.
The investigation into Hilburn’s actions is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
