ROSEBURG, Ore. — On Sunday, Douglas County experienced widespread flooding, impacting numerous areas across the region. As floodwaters continue to fluctuate, local authorities are urging residents to take extra precautions and remain vigilant, particularly as conditions may worsen through the evening hours.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement Sunday evening, advising residents that high water levels may persist for an extended period. “Certain areas may still experience elevated water levels for some time,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “This can be especially difficult to identify after dark, and motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution while driving.”
In light of the hazardous conditions, the Sheriff’s Office emphasized that residents who feel unsafe in their homes should not wait for an evacuation notice. Instead, they are encouraged to seek shelter with family, friends, or at designated shelters outside the affected areas.
While many temporary shelters set up during the day have already closed, the Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to contact Douglas County Emergency Communications at (541) 440-4471 if they need assistance. Emergency responders have been working tirelessly to handle a surge in flood-related emergencies, in addition to their regular duties. However, with roads inundated and conditions rapidly deteriorating, they are requesting that residents minimize unnecessary travel to alleviate strain on emergency resources.
“By reducing travel, community members can help ensure that emergency efforts can focus on the areas that need it most,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been actively working to reopen roads that were closed due to the storm. However, ODOT officials reported early Monday that some road closures remain in place, while additional areas are now affected. “Winter storm activity will continue through Monday, bringing widespread impacts to coastal, valley, and mountain areas,” ODOT said in a statement. “Conditions can change quickly, and travelers should be prepared for flooding and debris on the roads. Be cautious in work zones and expect potential delays and closures.”
