EUGENE, Ore. – An electrical explosion near the PeaceHealth University District Hospital in downtown Eugene sent first responders rushing to the scene on January 31. The incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m., with initial reports describing a large explosion in the area of 13th Avenue and Hilyard Street.
Eugene Springfield Fire and Eugene Police were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they found no active fire despite the initial explosion. Crews cordoned off the area, temporarily closing it to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic while they assessed the situation.
The Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) also responded to help mitigate the situation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and nearby surveillance footage appears to have captured the electrical fire at the moment it occurred.
While the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, authorities confirmed that no further danger was posed to the public once the scene was secured. Local officials are continuing to look into the exact nature of the electrical malfunction that led to the blast.
This incident highlights the potential hazards posed by electrical infrastructure in urban areas, though it ended without harm to residents or responders.
