CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Corvallis Police Department (CPD) has reported success in their bait package program aimed at curbing the rising problem of porch piracy in the area. The program, part of the CPD’s Community Livability Unit, utilizes bait packages equipped with tracking devices to alert authorities when stolen. This proactive approach has led to arrests and has provided a new tool in the fight against package theft.
Evan Hull, an officer within the Community Livability Unit, explained that the department has the flexibility to adjust bait package placements depending on trends in theft reports. “We can tailor our efforts to certain areas of town to address different problems,” Hull said. “For instance, if we’re seeing a rise in package theft in a particular neighborhood, we can focus our efforts there.”
Recently, the program resulted in a successful arrest after a suspect with a history of theft was apprehended. The individual was found in possession of multiple stolen packages. The bait package, which had been taken from a porch in the area, helped authorities pinpoint the suspect’s location, leading to their arrest.
For residents like Meghna Babbar-Sebens, who has experienced package and bike theft in her neighborhood, the program has been a welcome development. “I think it’s a good thing,” Babbar-Sebens said. “It’s smart to use technology to help identify who’s stealing and try to control the theft process.”
As the program continues to show success, CPD officials are optimistic about expanding it. Hull mentioned that there are ongoing conversations with major mailing companies, including USPS and Amazon, to explore ways to further protect residents’ deliveries. “Of course, we’d like to see what kind of funding we can secure to grow the program,” Hull noted. “Making it successful in Corvallis is important, and that’s something we’re working on.”
With package theft becoming an increasing issue across the nation, Corvallis’ innovative approach to the problem serves as an example of how communities can use technology and collaboration to address local crime. Through programs like the bait package initiative, the CPD aims to reduce thefts while fostering a greater sense of community involvement and accountability.
