Astoria, OR – A loose cow caused a commotion on Interstate 84 near Hood River, Oregon, on New Year’s Day, sparking a series of events that involved Oregon State Police (OSP), concerned drivers, and an exhausted animal.
The cow, a 4-H animal, had broken free from its enclosure in Washington after leaping over a 5-foot fence several days earlier. Its owners had been searching for the animal, but it wasn’t until New Year’s Day that the cow was spotted running along the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge.
Several drivers pulled over in an attempt to help corral the cow, but the animal, seemingly determined, jumped the median and began walking several miles along the busy highway. As the cow continued its unpredictable path, it eventually ended up on railroad tracks.
In a dramatic turn, a young woman stopped her vehicle in front of the cow in an effort to guide it back toward troopers. After a long and exhausting journey, the cow appeared to give up and collapsed from fatigue, succumbing to days of wandering.
OSP troopers responded swiftly, loading the cow onto a trailer. The animal was taken to a nearby property where it could rest and be safely cared for until it could be reunited with its owners.
This unusual incident highlights the unexpected challenges that law enforcement and concerned citizens sometimes face when dealing with animals on highways. Fortunately, the cow’s adventure ended safely, and it will soon be returned to its rightful home.
