High Gas Prices Impact Memorial Day Travel in Springfield and Beyond

High Gas Prices Impact Memorial Day Travel in Springfield and Beyond

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — As Memorial Day Weekend ushers in the unofficial start of summer, travelers in Springfield and surrounding areas are feeling the pinch of rising gas prices. According to data from Gas Buddy, gas prices in Eugene are currently about 70 cents higher than the national average, making holiday travel more expensive for many.

Out-of-state travelers report encountering significant price differences when crossing state lines. Paula Snook, visiting from out of state, noted that while gas prices in Oregon are somewhat lower compared to California and Nevada, the costs remain “crazy.” She added that prices in southern states tend to be much cheaper by comparison.

The surge in gas prices is also having a tangible effect on families hoping to take advantage of the holiday weekend. Seven White, another traveler, expressed concern that the high costs may limit travel options for working families. “Filling up is just crazy,” White said. “The prices need to drop to make it more convenient for families who don’t have working jobs every day.”

Local residents are similarly impacted. Springfield resident Chris Nguyen shared that he plans multiple stops for fuel on his trip to the Oregon coast, acknowledging the strain higher prices place on those trying to enjoy the holiday. “People can barely put food on the table, and they’re trying to have a good time,” Nguyen said.

Gas Buddy reports that prices have risen seven cents since last week, a spike attributed to surging oil prices following President Trump’s decision to reduce tariffs and negotiate new trade deals. Despite the increase, the company suggests drivers may still enjoy one of the most affordable summer travel seasons since the pandemic.
