Astoria, Ore. – A fatal crash on Highway 551 near Wilsonville has left two people dead and one young girl injured, according to Oregon State Police (OSP).
The crash occurred at approximately 8:36 a.m. on April 3, when a northbound Kia Forte, driven by 41-year-old Matthew Gene Rinehart of Eugene, collided head-on with a southbound Kia Soul, operated by 37-year-old Darci Ann Olivier of Wilsonville.
According to OSP, Rinehart was attempting to pass another vehicle in a “no passing zone” when the collision occurred. The impact of the crash resulted in both Rinehart and Olivier being declared dead at the scene.
A four-year-old girl, who was a passenger in Olivier’s vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released further details on her condition.
Traffic on Highway 551 was significantly delayed for approximately four hours as investigators worked to clear the scene and determine the cause of the crash. Authorities have confirmed that unsafe passing is believed to be the primary factor leading to the tragic incident.
The crash serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving, particularly in areas where passing is prohibited. The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
