Daycare Operator Arrested on Charges of Sexual Abuse in Florence

FLORENCE, Ore. – A local daycare operator has been arrested and arraigned on criminal charges of sexually abusing a child in his care. Keith William Berkner, 42, of Florence, is facing serious allegations of first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree sodomy. The alleged incidents took place in December 2024, involving a child under the age of 12.

Berkner was arrested on January 22, 2025, and is currently being held in custody. According to court records, the charges stem from accusations that Berkner abused the child while operating his daycare business, Keith Berkner Home Daycare, in Florence. The daycare, listed on several childcare service websites, is described as a license-exempt facility offering childcare and play experiences.

If convicted on all charges, Berkner faces up to 25 years in prison.

The case has sent shockwaves through the small coastal community of Florence, where Berkner’s daycare was a trusted source of care for local families. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the case or possible victims to come forward.

This arrest highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of children in unlicensed daycare environments. Local law enforcement continues to investigate the matter, and the public is advised to remain vigilant as more details unfold.

The charges have prompted discussions about the oversight of childcare facilities, particularly those operating outside of state licensing requirements. State officials have not yet commented on whether Berkner’s daycare was subject to any previous investigations or complaints.

As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how it will impact local regulations surrounding daycare operations in Oregon.
