Springfield, Ore. — A chlorine leak at the Springfield Utility Board (SUB) water treatment facility was successfully contained Friday afternoon with no threat to public safety, according to officials.
At approximately 2:18 p.m., the Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) responded to a report of a chlorine leak near 28th & M Street in Springfield. The leak was traced to a valve problem at the SUB facility. In response, the Eugene Region 2 Hazardous Materials Team, composed of ESF firefighters cross-trained as hazardous materials technicians, was dispatched to the scene.
Firefighters quickly worked to isolate the issue and prevent any further danger. Officials confirmed that the leak posed no threat to the surrounding community, and the situation was swiftly mitigated.
ESF crews continued to monitor the situation and are collaborating with the Springfield Utility Board to safely replace the malfunctioning equipment. Authorities emphasized that proper planning, response systems, and partnerships were key to the successful handling of the incident.
By late afternoon, the hazardous materials response had been reduced to routine operations, and the scene was deemed secure.
