Portland, OR – A man was arrested for allegedly shoplifting over $1,000 worth of goods during a “Shop with a Cop” event at a local Walmart in Chesterfield County. The event, which pairs families in need with law enforcement officers for a day of holiday shopping, was meant to spread cheer and support for the community.

Over 50 officers from the Chesterfield County Police Department, along with the sheriff’s department, were present at the Walmart on the day of the event, helping children and families select toys and gifts funded by donations. However, while officers were assisting families, another individual was allegedly attempting to steal.

According to Chesterfield County Police Lieutenant James Lamb, Walmart staff notified officers that a shoplifting incident was in progress. “A member of the staff at Walmart came up to us and informed us they had a shoplifting in progress,” Lieutenant Lamb told WTVR.

At the time of the incident, the store was crowded with uniformed officers who were able to quickly respond. “Between the sheriff’s department and police officers, we had about 50 uniformed personnel at the store,” Lamb explained.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was promptly arrested. Police recovered more than $1,000 worth of stolen items from the suspect, who was taken into custody without further incident.

The “Shop with a Cop” event, which serves as an opportunity for local families to shop with the help of officers, continued without disruption. While the alleged shoplifting cast a shadow over the event, it was clear that the law enforcement presence was effective in maintaining safety and security throughout the day.

This event, which has become a holiday tradition in the area, highlights the ongoing partnership between law enforcement and the community to ensure a positive experience for all participants. Despite the incident, the officers’ swift response helped bring the situation under control, ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
