Astoria, Ore. — The Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is asking for the public’s help in identifying those responsible for the illegal killing of a wolf in Union County.
On January 29, 2025, Fish and Wildlife troopers discovered a tracking collar along Catherine Creek Lane, located approximately 11 miles southeast of Union, Oregon. The collar, identified as belonging to OR-86, was determined by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to have been worn by the alpha male of the Frazier Mountain pack. Despite finding the collar, authorities were unable to locate the wolf’s carcass.
Troopers believe the collar was removed after the unlawful killing of the wolf, which they suspect occurred sometime in January. The incident is now under investigation, and authorities are working to gather information that could lead to those responsible for the killing.
As the case develops, Oregon State Police are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Turn In Poachers (TIP) hotline at 1-800-452-7888 or *OSP (*677) from a mobile phone. Tips can remain anonymous, and callers are asked to reference case number SP25-032551 when providing information.
The killing of OR-86, the alpha male of the Frazier Mountain pack, marks another unfortunate incident in the ongoing challenges of wildlife conservation efforts in Oregon. Officials continue to stress the importance of protecting the state’s wildlife and are hoping the public will assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
