EUGENE, Ore. — A fatal shooting occurred late on the night of March 8, 2025, on West 18th Avenue in West Eugene, sending shockwaves through the local community. Eugene police responded to a shots-fired call at approximately 11:30 p.m. and discovered a man deceased at the scene.

Neighbors reported that crime in the area is rare, with the occasional issue of speeding drivers being the only usual concern. Will Fice, a resident living near the site of the shooting, expressed his disbelief at the turn of events. He recalled being awakened by flashing police lights and seeing officers blocking both sides of the road as they investigated the incident.

“I just remember at some point, super late, being woken up and seeing these lights coming in — they were police lights,” Fice said. “When I looked out the window, I saw two police cars parked in the middle of the road. It seemed like they were focusing on the house next door.”

Neighbors living adjacent to the home where the shooting occurred described hearing sounds of a commotion followed by what they believed to be gunshots before law enforcement arrived.

According to the Eugene Police Department, officers responded to the scene after reports of gunfire. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Justin Garrett Huser, who was found dead at the location. Police later arrested 36-year-old Kenneth John Alvord, who was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and lodged at the Lane County Jail. Authorities believe that Alvord and Huser were familiar with one another, with some social media reports indicating that the shooting occurred during an altercation between the two men while they were intoxicated. Alvord is said to have been a family friend of Huser.

The tragic incident has left the local community in shock, with many struggling to process how such an event could unfold in an area known for its tranquility.

“I’m just in complete disbelief. I’m trying to process it,” Fice added. “I don’t understand how this could happen in this area.”

As the investigation continues, questions remain about the circumstances that led to the shooting, and local residents are left grappling with the unsettling reality that violence has touched their neighborhood.
