Explosion in Lebanon Neighborhood Leaves One Dead, Two Firefighters Injured

Lebanon, OR — A powerful explosion shattered the quiet atmosphere of a Lebanon neighborhood early Saturday morning, resulting in one fatality and injuries to two firefighters, authorities confirmed.

Shortly after 9 a.m., emergency crews responded to a blaze at a residence on West Grant Street, where multiple vehicles were found engulfed in flames. Witnesses described the explosion as so forceful that debris scattered across the block and thick smoke billowed into neighboring yards, including those of a nearby retirement home.

Lebanon Fire District officials reported that one person was discovered deceased inside a vehicle destroyed by the fire. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while responding to the scene and were promptly transported to a local hospital.

Residents expressed shock and fear following the incident. “It was just like bombs going off. It was pretty terrifying,” said neighborhood resident Nanci Wischnofskie, who witnessed the explosion and subsequent fires.

The incident has compounded ongoing concerns in the community. Wischnofskie noted that the neighborhood has faced numerous disturbances in recent months, escalating tensions among residents.

In response to continued issues surrounding the property, local neighbors formed a neighborhood watch group aimed at improving safety. Cindi Pitassi, captain of the neighborhood watch, stated, “Because of this here that we’ve been dealing with, we started the neighborhood watch.”

Community members voiced frustration over persistent safety fears. “All we want to do is make neighborhoods aware of their surroundings and what’s going on. If you see something suspicious, report it,” Wischnofskie urged. “It’s time to get stuff done. We shouldn’t have to live like this or be on pins and needles about our safety and well-being because of one household.”

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. The identity of the deceased has not been released at this time.

Meanwhile, residents remain hopeful for accountability and meaningful change to restore peace and safety to their neighborhood.
