Convicted Sex Offender Released in Douglas County, Raising Concerns

ROSEBURG, Ore. – A convicted sex offender, labeled as one of the highest risks for reoffending, has been released from custody following a court order, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO).

Uriah Shawn Strauss, 46, was released on April 2 after serving time in connection with multiple charges, including first-degree sex abuse and attempted first-degree rape. Strauss, a Level III sex offender, has been classified as someone who presents the highest risk of reoffending due to the severity and nature of his past crimes.

Most recently, Strauss was arrested in January 2024 after allegedly sending an inappropriate letter to a female student at a Roseburg high school. The letter reportedly outlined Strauss’s desires for a romantic relationship with the young girl. He was charged with unlawful contact with a child following the incident.

The DCSO has emphasized that Level III sex offenders, such as Strauss, are considered to have a significantly higher likelihood of reoffending compared to other offenders. As a result, the community is being advised to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior, especially involving minors.

Despite his release, authorities have stated that Strauss remains under close supervision. The decision to release him was made in accordance with a court order, and while he is free from law enforcement custody, his criminal record continues to draw concern from both law enforcement and the local community.

The situation has prompted discussions about the challenges of managing high-risk offenders and the safety of vulnerable individuals, particularly in environments like schools where minors may be at increased risk.

Community members are encouraged to stay informed and report any concerns to authorities as Strauss integrates back into society. Local officials have also suggested that residents remain aware of his status, with information regarding his location and potential restrictions available through local law enforcement agencies.

For those seeking more information about managing offenders like Strauss, the DCSO and other organizations provide resources and guidelines on how to address concerns regarding sex offenders in the community.
