COBURG, Ore. – On Thursday, February 20th, a crowd gathered in Coburg to witness a dramatic scene unfold as firefighters battled a structure fire. However, this fire was no emergency; it was part of a planned training exercise designed to provide hands-on experience for volunteer firefighters.
The training involved four volunteer firefighters, marking their final step toward joining the Coburg Fire Department. The exercise focused on critical skills including search and rescue, ventilation, and fire exposure protection—essential techniques that firefighters must master to effectively respond to real-world emergencies.
Coburg Fire Chief Chad Minter emphasized the importance of live burn training for new recruits. “This is the most realistic training experience we can provide, helping our volunteers become familiar with the challenges they will face on the job,” Minter explained.
The department strives to secure one structure each year for this type of training, giving volunteers an opportunity to practice in an authentic fire scenario. The live burn exercises offer a safe environment for learning, allowing firefighters to gain confidence and improve their skills.
In addition to training the new recruits, the event was open to the public, with the hope of attracting more volunteers to the department. As the demand for fire services continues to grow, the Coburg Fire Department is eager to expand its roster of volunteers, ensuring the community remains well-protected.
The department’s initiative to involve the public in the training process highlights the importance of community support and volunteerism. It is events like these that help strengthen the bond between first responders and the people they serve.
