GRESHAM, Ore. — A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed last week at Vance Park, marking a tragic incident that has shaken the community. Authorities were called to the park, located at 1400 S.E. 182nd Ave., at approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, after reports of a shooting.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim, identified as Jorge Ovidio Mateo Vasquez, dead from gunshot wounds. The suspect, or suspects, had already fled the area before officers could secure the scene.
Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez arrived shortly after the shooting, expressing deep concern over the growing gun violence in the region. “I’m obviously very concerned about gun violence in our community. Particularly in East County, but really throughout our county,” Vasquez said. “I have always said that I support our law enforcement efforts, I support my DAs, and so I really want to make sure that they know that by me being here to see all this firsthand.”
Vasquez emphasized his commitment to seeking justice for the victim’s family and vowed to support law enforcement in their investigation.
The East County Major Crimes Team is leading the investigation, working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify any suspects. Authorities have not released further details on potential leads or motives at this time.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the loss of a young life and the disturbing rise of gun violence in the area.
