Roseburg City Councilor Resigns Amid Allegations of Intimidation and Threats

ROSEBURG, Ore. – Tensions within the Roseburg City Council have escalated following the resignation of Councilor Kylee Rummel, who accused unnamed members of the council of attempting to intimidate her and influence her vote. Rummel, representing Ward 1, submitted her resignation on Friday, January 24, and shared a statement on Facebook over the weekend detailing her experiences.

In her post, Rummel claimed that certain council members had threatened her job and used intimidation tactics to sway her decisions. The allegations have raised serious concerns regarding the conduct of the council, prompting an immediate response from Mayor Larry Rich.

During a City Council meeting on Monday, January 27, Mayor Rich read Rummel’s resignation statement in full and called for an independent investigation into the matter. He emphasized that the claims made by Rummel could suggest violations of state laws governing council conduct, and he vowed to get to the bottom of the issue.

“These statements are very concerning,” Mayor Rich said during the livestreamed meeting. “We lost a good City Councilor who served with integrity and honesty.” He continued, stressing the need for transparency in the investigation and expressing his commitment to uncovering the truth behind the resignation.

The mayor outlined the key areas of the investigation, which will include whether council members used intimidation to influence votes, whether jobs were threatened as a means of control, and whether the city’s business was conducted in violation of public meetings laws. Additionally, the inquiry will look into allegations that the City Manager’s job evaluation was improperly handled due to efforts by some councilors to replace the current manager with one of their own.

“I strongly believe in open, transparent government,” Mayor Rich stated after the meeting. “The community deserves to know the results, and if there were violations, there will be consequences.”

The resignation and subsequent investigation have raised questions about the dynamics within the Roseburg City Council and the extent of internal power struggles. As the investigation unfolds, many in the community are closely watching to see if any legal or ethical violations will be uncovered and how the council will move forward.

The outcome of this inquiry could have significant implications for the future functioning of the Roseburg City Council and the public’s trust in local government. For now, the city is left waiting for answers.
