Astoria, OR – A plane crash occurred early Monday morning at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, leaving five people rescued from the wreckage. Emergency crews quickly responded to the incident, and all passengers were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, which involved a corporate jet that skidded off the runway and into Coos Bay.
According to airport officials, the plane came to a stop after skidding off the runway’s end. Stephanie Kilmer, a representative of Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, noted that the pilot did not take evasive measures to avoid critical navigational components at the end of the runway. “He was on the ground and skidded off the end of the runway, so I don’t know if it was an equipment issue,” Kilmer explained.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the crash. Airport officials have stated that the incident is being thoroughly reviewed, with a focus on whether equipment malfunction or human error contributed to the mishap.
The five passengers aboard the jet were all treated for minor injuries at Bay Area Hospital (BAH). Three individuals were discharged, while one remained under care for further treatment. A fifth passenger was transferred to another hospital that could provide specialized care. BAH’s Chief Nursing Officer, Jennifer Collins, reflected on the hospital’s response, calling it the facility’s “first real big event” since she joined two and a half years ago. “Probably six months ago, multi-agency did a drill of exactly this,” Collins said. “So actually having this happen this morning, my first question was, is this for real? And our emergency manager was like, ‘No, I’m not running a drill this morning.’”
The swift and coordinated response from emergency services was praised by the hospital and airport officials. The incident occurred despite extensive preparation efforts, with the airport having practiced for such scenarios to ensure that they could handle a real emergency efficiently. The passengers, who were on board a corporate jet designed to carry a small group, are expected to follow up with medical treatments after being discharged.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to uncover more details about what caused the plane to skid off the runway, leaving a community and airport on high alert for the possible impacts of this unusual event.
