PORTLAND, Ore. — Gregory Leon Robinson, an adult in custody at the Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras, Oregon, passed away on the morning of March 17, 2025, at a local hospital. Robinson, 35, had been incarcerated at the facility since October 24, 2023, after being sentenced from Lane County. He had an earliest release date of July 5, 2026.
The Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) confirmed Robinson’s death, stating that the Oregon State Police were notified, as is standard procedure in all in-custody deaths. The DOC emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of the approximately 12,000 individuals housed across the state’s 12 correctional facilities.
In a statement, the DOC expressed its seriousness regarding all in-custody deaths, asserting that it follows established protocols in such instances. “DOC takes all in-custody deaths seriously,” the agency said. “While crime information is part of the public record, we choose to disclose it only upon request in order to respect the privacy of families and victims.”
Robinson’s next of kin have been informed of his death, but further details surrounding the cause of death have not been released, pending investigation. As the Oregon State Police continue their inquiry, the public will be kept informed should any additional information be made available.
The department’s actions are in line with established policies for handling incidents involving in-custody deaths, and the investigation is ongoing.
