EUGENE, Ore. – A 59-year-old man is facing an arson charge after allegedly attempting to set fire to a local dance studio on Sunday morning, according to the Eugene Police Department (EPD).
At approximately 6:30 a.m. on February 22, police officers responded to reports of a fire-related incident at the Ballet Academy, located in a midrise apartment building on East 16th Avenue. Authorities say a suspect was seen shoving burning materials through the building’s mail slot, sparking concern for the safety of the establishment and surrounding residents.
Following a prompt investigation, EPD officers identified the suspect as Lachlan Scott Proffitt. After a brief search, Proffitt was located and arrested just before 9:30 a.m. on February 23 in the 2400 block of Hilyard Street, Eugene. He was subsequently transported to the Lane County Jail and charged with first-degree arson.
No injuries were reported, and authorities are continuing to investigate the motive behind the alleged attack. The Ballet Academy, a well-known local dance studio, was closed at the time of the incident, avoiding potential damage or harm to its patrons.
Proffitt is expected to face court proceedings as the investigation continues.
