SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A 35-year-old man is in custody after allegedly leading Oregon State Police on a high-speed chase down Interstate 5 late Wednesday night. The man, identified as Nicholas Michael Jamison, reportedly evaded law enforcement for several miles before being safely apprehended.
According to the Oregon State Police, the incident began at approximately 11:22 p.m. on May 7, when a trooper attempted to pull over a grey Honda Civic near the intersection of Gateway Street and Beltline Highway in Springfield. The traffic stop was initiated for a routine violation, but as the officer approached, the Springfield Police Department issued a warning that the driver may pose a threat to law enforcement. Authorities said Jamison, under the influence of methamphetamine and reportedly experiencing psychosis, had expressed intentions to commit “suicide by cop.”
Despite the warning, Jamison did not pull over. Instead, he drove recklessly and sped off southbound onto Interstate 5. Troopers followed Jamison for about 15 miles, during which the suspect reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. Attempts by officers to stop the vehicle with spike strips were unsuccessful.
The chase continued until Jamison’s vehicle was eventually stopped just north of Cottage Grove. Law enforcement said the suspect threatened to harm himself with a knife, but officers were able to safely take him into custody without further incident.
Following the arrest, Jamison was transported for a medical evaluation before being booked into the Lane County Jail. He faces charges of eluding police, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment.
As a result of the high-speed pursuit, a section of Interstate 5 near milepost 180 was temporarily closed for about an hour. Authorities worked to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the situation before Jamison was apprehended.
The Oregon State Police is continuing its investigation into the incident.
