VIDA, Ore. – A Lane County man is among the 205 individuals arrested during a nationwide operation aimed at dismantling child sex exploitation networks. The operation, which took place in late April, was led by the FBI and resulted in the identification and apprehension of several predators involved in child sex crimes.
The U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) announced that the five-day operation successfully resulted in the rescue of 115 children and the arrest of individuals across multiple states. Among those arrested was Berret J. Brown, a 40-year-old man from Vida, Oregon. Brown was charged with multiple federal offenses related to child sexual exploitation.
According to the USDOJ, between July and August of 2024, Brown allegedly used social media platforms such as Snapchat and the online game platform Roblox to engage with minors. The accused is said to have enticed children into sending sexually explicit videos, leading to charges that include enticing minors, receiving child pornography, using a minor to produce explicit images, and transferring obscene material to a minor.
In addition to Brown’s arrest, two other individuals in Oregon were taken into custody as part of the same operation. Robert Andrew Arias, 54, of Salem, and Michael Joseph Cambalik, 35, of Beaverton, also face federal child exploitation charges.
The FBI’s operation, which targeted online child predators, reflects a growing concern about the safety of children in the digital age. With the rise of social media and gaming platforms, authorities are increasingly focusing on the ways in which predators use these tools to exploit vulnerable minors.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon emphasized the importance of these operations in protecting children and bringing offenders to justice. The arrests made during this nationwide effort send a strong message to those who prey on children: they will be held accountable, no matter where they are.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are urging parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and take steps to monitor their children’s online activity. This operation serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in the virtual world, as well as the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation.
For now, the justice system will determine the fate of those arrested, including Brown, as their cases move through the federal court system.
