EUGENE, Ore. – A natural gas leak in a downtown Eugene building prompted evacuations and traffic closures on the morning of April 3rd, as emergency responders worked to secure the area and contain the hazardous situation.
At approximately 8:47 a.m., Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) crews were dispatched to reports of a gas leak at 525 High Street, located near the bustling 5th Street Market. The building, which houses six businesses, was immediately evacuated for safety reasons.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered natural gas leaking from inside the structure. With the number of occupants and businesses in the building, several fire engines and personnel were deployed to address the situation. Emergency responders, alongside crews from Northwest Natural and the Eugene Water and Electric Board, quickly began ventilating the building to disperse the gas.
The coordinated effort between the agencies helped ensure the gas was removed safely within an hour and a half. During this time, Eugene Police controlled traffic around the area to keep both pedestrians and drivers out of harm’s way.
No injuries were reported, and the building was cleared of gas before any further complications could arise. The cause of the leak remains under investigation, though it appears to have been contained before it could lead to any major safety concerns.
Emergency responders praised the swift collaboration between the various agencies involved and urged the public to remain cautious during ongoing safety assessments. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation to ensure there are no lingering risks in the area.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness in managing potential hazards in densely populated areas like downtown Eugene.
