EUGENE, Ore. — On Tuesday, February 11, the Eugene Police Department (EPD) took swift action to ensure compliance with Oregon’s sex offender registration laws. Two officers were temporarily reassigned from their regular patrol duties to focus exclusively on tracking down non-compliant sex offenders in Eugene.
The department received a list of offenders from the Oregon State Police (OSP) Sex Offender Unit, highlighting individuals the state wanted local authorities to contact. These officers then set out to ensure that those on the list were up-to-date with their annual registration requirements.
In total, the officers located and contacted 10 sex offenders, ensuring they completed their mandatory annual reporting. During this sweep, five of the offenders were found to no longer be residing at their last registered addresses. As a result, officers took immediate action to ensure those offenders were brought into compliance with the law.
The effort comes as part of ongoing efforts by both local and state agencies to manage the approximately 2,300 registered sex offenders across Lane County, with over 1,100 living within the city of Eugene alone. According to estimates by OSP, approximately 288 offenders in Eugene were identified as non-compliant, underscoring the importance of these periodic compliance checks.
EPD’s initiative highlights the city’s continued commitment to public safety, ensuring that individuals who have been convicted of sex crimes remain accountable for their actions under state law. The officers’ recent efforts aim to minimize risks and increase community awareness about the monitoring of registered offenders.
This operation serves as a reminder that the fight against non-compliance continues, with law enforcement agencies constantly working to ensure the safety and security of the residents in Eugene and beyond.
