EUGENE, Ore. – A 42-year-old Eugene man was arrested early Monday morning after being found in possession of stolen mail, a firearm, and methamphetamine, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).

At approximately 6 a.m. on May 5, a deputy noticed a teal and green 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck parked behind several businesses on Green Acres Road. The truck, which had been reported stolen, prompted an immediate response from local law enforcement. Deputies set up spike strips in anticipation of a potential pursuit as rush-hour traffic began to build.

Once the spike strips were in place, deputies moved in to make contact with the driver, later identified as Thomas Anthony Smith of Eugene. According to LCSO officials, Smith attempted to flee the scene but was quickly pinned in place by patrol vehicles. Despite his efforts to escape, Smith was apprehended after a drone was deployed to assist in locating him.

Upon his arrest, deputies discovered a variety of items on Smith’s person, including a firearm, methamphetamine, and several pieces of stolen mail. Among the stolen mail were checks that Smith allegedly attempted to forge signatures on, according to the sheriff’s office.

Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Lane County Jail, where he faces multiple charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm, mail theft, first-degree forgery, and possession of methamphetamine. Additionally, Smith had an active warrant for failing to appear in court on charges related to assault and strangulation.

This arrest marks the latest in a series of ongoing efforts by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office to combat property crime in the Eugene area. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case and encourage anyone with further information to come forward.
