EUGENE, Ore. – A 23-year-old California man was arrested Monday in Eugene after an investigation revealed he had traveled to Oregon to sexually abuse a minor he met online. Michael Matthew Martinez was taken into custody following a search warrant executed by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) on April 14.
The investigation began on April 4 when deputies responded to a report of sexual abuse that had allegedly occurred in Veneta. Authorities determined that Martinez had engaged in online communications with a minor victim before traveling from California to Oregon, where he reportedly abused the victim multiple times.
LCSO detectives, assigned to the Lane County Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, quickly initiated an investigation into the incident. On April 14, the team served a search warrant at a residence on Tabor Street in Eugene, where Martinez was arrested.
Martinez is now facing a range of serious charges, including second-degree sex abuse, third-degree sodomy, third-degree rape, second- and first-degree encouraging child sex abuse, using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, first-degree online sexual corruption of a child, and luring a minor.
Martinez was booked into the Lane County Jail, where he is being held pending further legal proceedings. Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the victim’s identity or their current condition.
The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding online predators targeting minors. The LCSO, alongside the ICAC Task Force, continues to work diligently to investigate and prevent child exploitation. Law enforcement officials urge parents to monitor their children’s online activity and report any suspicious interactions to authorities.
The investigation remains active, and more information may be released as it becomes available.
