Astoria, OR – According to the state officials, construction is underway on a project that will add turn lanes, pedestrian connections and a new traffic signal near the north end of McCullough Bridge.
On Tuesday, March 19, contractors will disconnect the sensor loops that regulate when the traffic signal switches from green to yellow and red. Instead, the signal will be operated by a timer.
Due to higher traffic volumes, U.S. 101 traffic will be given priority through the intersection. Signals on East Bay Road will provide the same amount of green time regardless of how many vehicles are waiting to turn onto the highway.
Some East Bay Road drivers may have to wait more than one traffic signal cycle to pass through the intersection. Motorists on U.S. 101 may get a red light even when there are no vehicles waiting on East Bay Road.
ODOT expects to reconnect the detection system in May, when the new traffic signal poles are installed.
