Astoria, OR – Officials released a statement, saying that this initiative is made possible through a grant from Oregon Impact. On May 23, 2024, the Astoria Police Department will deploy additional officers as part of a pedestrian safety enforcement program.
The focus of this enforcement effort will be on enhancing pedestrian safety by targeting drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Specifically, officers will be vigilant in identifying vehicles that:
– Fail to yield to an officer acting as a pedestrian crossing at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
– Illegally pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks.
– Commit other traffic violations.
It’s crucial to note that the fine for infractions such as failing to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian, or passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian, is $265.00.
The enforcement efforts will primarily concentrate on key intersections, including Marine Dr. & 6th St., Marine Dr. & 17th St., Marine Dr. & 10th St., Klaskanine Ave. & 7th St., and Lief Erikson Dr. & 37th St.
